How to run a timed quiz
Use the quiz timer for individual questions, not the whole quiz. Put it on the smartboard, read a question, and pick how long to think: a quick 15 or 30 seconds for recall and vocabulary, 45 or 60 seconds for tougher ones. For longer questions, like a math problem or a reading passage, tap Custom and set the minutes. Giving the class 15 or 30 minutes for the whole quiz? Use Custom or the 15/30-minute timer instead. When the fuse blows, hit restart for the next question.
Quick recall quizzes do more than check answers; they help learning stick. Research on the “testing effect” (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006) found that briefly recalling material improves long-term retention more than simply rereading it. Keep the stakes low and the pace lively, and the bomb does the nagging for you.
